This collection is a flashback from primarily two locations: the 1953 Boston broadcast from the Hi-Hat (quartet is accompanied by the Dick Twardzik Trio), as well as the "lost" Milton H. Greene private recordings from 1947 where Eager duels Serge Chaloff and has exchanges with Charlie Parker. CD: $19.98 (US) - ($17.98 with *discount) | ACE - UK |
7/1/2005 | |
| OLDIES: Hank Ballard is one of the best-loved of the King/Federal artists and this is where he started out with the Royals (who soon became the Midnighters). These are the complete recordings by the Royals. The group had its first chart success with 'Get It' at #6 R&B in 1953, followed by the controversial 'Work With Me Annie,' an R&B chart topper in 1954. The earlier recordings are classy doo wop, notably the original version of the later Gladys Knight hit, 'Every Beat Of My Heart' (here without the usual overdubbed rhythm section). Also included as bonus tracks are previously unissued takes of 'The Shrine Of St. Cecilia' and 'Work With Me Annie'. Includes biographical sketch by Paul Harris based on an interview with Hank Ballard. | |||||

FIREBEAT! (Stock on hand: 1) |
CD: $19.98 (US) - ($17.98 with *discount) | ACE - UK |
10/6/2006 | |
| OLDIES: Ace has two volumes of vocals by the Fireballs that cover most of the combo's output, but recent investigations into the Norman Petty vaults have uncovered a slew of unissued material, the cream of which is gathered on This CD. It CD focuses on the tougher side of the Fireballs studio career during the mid-1960s, as they came to terms with the impact of the British Invasion, and made some fine beat group-styled recordings of their own. Featured are rockin' covers of items by the Knickerbockers, Paul Revere & The Raiders, Beach Boys and others. As an added bonus, the enhanced portion of the CD features color footage of the Fireballs performing three songs from a Texas TV pop show circa 1968, including "Bottle Of Wine."More details:Fireballs vocalist Jimmy Gilmer is to the fore, indulging his love of folk rock on superb versions of 'Codine' and 'Thunder & Lightnin'', not to mention an alternate version of the group's swansong hit 'Bottle Of Wine'. Original Fireballs frontman Chuck Tharp also weighs-in with 'Tough Times', a 1964 session where he is backed by his former bandmates. Most tracks on "Firebeat!" are making their debut on CD, and the sound quality on all is second-to-none, showcasing the masterful production skills of Norman Petty. Also features punchy, guitar-fuelled workouts on 'Kansas City' and 'Summertime Blues', and strong British-flavoured original material such as 'Never You Mind' and 'Come To Me'. | |||||

EXOTIC GUITARS FROM THE CLOVIS VAULTS (LIMITED EDITION) (Stock on hand: 1) |
CD: $31.98 (US) - ($28.78 with *discount) | ACE - UK |
9/10/2010 | |
| ROCK: When "Wide World Hits by The String-A-Longs" was issued by Atco in 1968, buyers could hardly have been aware that they were actually purchasing an instrumental LP by The Fireballs. The band were simply masquerading under the name of the String-A-Longs at Norman Petty's behest. This album is the centrepiece of this CD, plus the non-album track "Popi" which was also issued under the String-A-Longs name. After much searching in the Clovis vaults we have been fortunate enough to discover an additional five titles - versions of the Doors' "Light My Fire", the Supremes' "Love Child", Johnny Nash's "Hold Me Tight", Classic IV's "Stormy" and Otis Redding's "Dock Of The Bay" - which were originally recorded for the project but not included on the album. Here they are correctly credited to the Fireballs or George Tomsco. We've also discovered nine more previously unreleased Fireballs' tracks, making this a veritable feast for the instrumental fan. All embellished by the experts at Pipeline Magazine's authoritative notes. Limited edition of 1500. | |||||
