OLDIES:
These 30 incredible 1960s recordings are the missing link between rockabilly and garage punk. Of the handful of singles Carter released in the '60s, several such as "Jailhouse Rock" and "Mary Sue" have become prized collectors items amongst aficionados of over-the-top rock. Carter's style defies stylistic pigeonholing, coming on like a tortured Gene Vincent backed by the Seeds, or like Roky Erickson if he sported a quiff. A true punk Elvis. This first time anthology features mostly unissued material from sessions Carter cut with his collaborators Arlie Miller and Jerry Merritt in Illinois and Washington in the mid-1960s. The super-compressed, Joe Meek-like garage production complements the wild material perfectly.

Every Saturday night for a quarter-century, Janette Carter has taken the stage at the Carter Family Fold in Hiltons, Virginia, making good the promise she made to her father, Carter Family patriarch A.P. Carter, to keep his music alive. Janette sings in the forceful and soulful Appalachian style pioneered by her mother, Sara Carter. The core of the repertoire on this 78 minute CD is Carter Family songs, but she also includes a few that she wrote herself, as well as several songs that the Carter Family performed, but didn't record. The instrumentation is spare and to-the-point, and the focus is on Janette's lovely autoharp playing.

In celebration of Janette Carter's 80th birthday on July 2, 2003, Bear Family and County Records make available once more Janette and Joe's 1966 album, "Joe & Janette Sing Carter Family Favorites." Just before Janette and Joe's father, A.P. Carter, died in Nov. 1960, they promised him they would keep the music alive, and this album was one of the first steps on their journey. It has the timeless quality of the very best Carter Family recordings. That the original songs recorded by the Carter Family survive at all is due to A.P. Carter's infallible ear, and the fact that they're still heard and played today is due in great measure to the tireless effort of Janette Carter.

This box contains a wealth of previously unseen photos from Anita's daughter Lorrie, her friend Vicky Langdon, and memorabilia from Anita's career. Also featured are new interviews and a detailed biography by Hank Davis, examining both her personal life and career.
