VOCALS - JAZZ & POP: This is the first overview of the essential recordings of Oscar Brown Jr. on Columbia. This 23 track compilation includes tracks from all four of his Columbia albums, including seven tracks from his first, "Sin And Soul". Oscar was a pioneer of protest songwriting and he was a key figure in the early civil rights movement, as reflected in his lyrics. Many of his songs are famous in their own right - with mod and R&B clubbers especially fond of "Humdrum Blues" - and his songs "Work Song" and "The Snake" have become standards (this CD includes the original, superior versions). Of his four albums, only one has been reissued and this album sees 16 tracks released on CD for the first time.

JAZZ: Tears of sorrow mingled with tears of joy as Oscar Peterson fans realized that the keyboard genius who had just recovered his health was still capable of amazing them all, although he had obviously forfeited some of his past vitality. This may well have induced MPS - the label with whom Oscar Petersen himself claimed to have made his best recordings - to search their archives for lost tapes from Peterson's heydey. And lo and behold, a number of previously unreleased recordings were discovered which had been taped "exclusively for my friends" in the private studio in Villingen in 1965-1968. The electric atmosphere of these live sessions before a mere handful of listeners proves once again just how at home the musicians felt in the Black Forest villa - as is borne out by the fact that Peterson's usual trio formation alternated with his stand-in musicians of Sam Jones on the bass and Bobby Durham on the drums. And now, exclusively for all jazz fans, these amazing tracks are available for the very first time on an LP filled with glorious sound. Whether long-time collector or jazz newcomer, one thing is certain: this album belongs in every collection!." Recording: May 1965, November 1967 and October 1968 at H.G. Brunner-Schwer's private studio's in Villingen/ Germany by H.-G. Brunner-Schwer / Production: H.-G. Brunner-Schwer." JAZZ: Just a glance at the original cover is enough - the 'King of the Trumpet' and the 'King of the Keyboard' must have thoroughly enjoyed making this album back in 1957. Musical sparks obviously flashed right from the very first title. Well, that's not really surprising since the two musicians were the 'dream team' of the Fifties, and only the producer Norman Granz, who had both artists under contract, could make that dream come true. Louis Armstrong is at the centre of most titles as singer, but his crystal-clear, brilliant trumpet sound had lost nothing of its fascination in the Fifties. Naturally Oscar Peterson does not let himself be restricted to the mere role of accompanist - he's far too genial, too full of imagination and technically accomplished for that. "You Go To My Head", in the version as sung by Billie Holiday, can match hers any day, filled as it is with unspent freshness and clarity. This title provides a good example of how Armstrong and the Peterson Quartet breathed new life into the old war horses of the "American Songbook" and set new standards for the art of improvisation. 'There's No You', in which Louis is joined by Herb Ellis, is a jewel of a performance and deserves special mention. The old MGM/Verve pressings often had the drawback that the high notes tended to hiss, which of course spoiled listening to Armstrong's voice. Luckily this defect has been ironed out in this new pressing.." Recording: October 1957 in Chicago, Illinois Production: Norman Granz." "Louis Armstrong meets Oscar Peterson" - Louis Armstrong (voc, tp); Oscar Peterson (p); Herb Ellis (g); Ray Brown (b); Louis Bellson (dr)." standard sleeve

JAZZ: When the contract with Verve was terminated at the beginning of 1964, Mercury's producers and owners endeavoured to find new openings for Oscar Peterson who was committed to the piano trio. Among them was an LP of songs with Nat King Cole numbers scored for big band, the only long composition by Peterson - a reminiscence of his Canadian native country, a Latin album, and the present meet-up with Clark Terry. Filled with mutual respect, with a complete understanding of one another's humour, and deliciously swinging without being obtrusive, these ten numbers will get your feet tapping and your fingers snapping - although exactly 40 years have passed by. Especially the blues pieces such as "Squeaky's Blues", "Blues For Smedley" and "Incoherent Blues" are little oases of relaxed swing, freed as they are of the composers' or producers' preconceived ideas. In the liner notes, Oscar Peterson mentions how proud he is of the introduction to "They Didn't Believe". And he deserves to be, but not just of this! A further reason for the relaxed atmosphere may well be that Oscar Peterson was permitted to play his own piano for the first time at a recording session. Surely he makes special mention of this because at the highly praised live sessions for Verve in London House in 1962 he had to perform on an out-of-tune piano which impaired the recordings. Looking back, one shouldn't forget either that Oscar Peterson's ears had already been spoiled by the Steinway and Boesendorfer pianos of SABA producer Brunner-Schwer and his excellent recording technique in his Black Forest studio. Mercury's equally good recording technique, which is just as legendary today and eclipsed many other companies in 1964, combined with the pure vinyl used for the present pressing guarantees excellent sound. No need to worry about finger snapping - that will start up spontaneously.." Recording: August 1964 in New York City Production: Norman Granz." "Oscar Peterson Trio + One" - Oscar Peterson (p); Clark Terry (tr); Ray Brown (b); Ed Thigpen (dr)." standard sleeve

JAZZ: Many will know the great Oscar Peterson only as a soloist or as part of a trio. But he is equally sovereign and sensitive when accompanying soloists on all kinds of instruments. And this has been proved not only by this particular Verve LP! Peterson allows 'Bags' to create his own concept, placing no constraints on him anywhere, but confining himself to providing musical support. Of course, this is delivered by the trio with their customary aplomb: they make their mark in a relaxed and airy manner, the harmonies flow easily and playfully out of their minds into their fingers and are developed almost as if by magic. The balance between theme and improvisation is perfect, and transparency is preserved from beginning to end in all six numbers. Oscar Peterson's genius is perceptible in every second of the music. The reproach that he was a soulless 'mere technician' might not be altogether untrue on occasion, as when Peterson wanted to show that there were others after Art Tatum who also had nimble fingers. But in this particular production this is nowhere discernible. A famous critic once described the music on this LP as an ¯elementary lesson in the grammar and soul of jazz®. Surely there is no better classification of this vinyl disc, although it will certainly appeal to more advanced jazz lovers too.." Recording: September 1961 in New York City by Val Valentin Production: Jim Davis." "Very Tall" - Oscar Peterson (p); Ray Brown (b); Ed Thigpen (dr); Milt Jackson (vib)." gatefold sleeve

JAZZ: Frank Sinatra once called Nelson Riddle the greatest arranger in the world. Well, you might be able to name one or two others whom you could put alongside him or maybe even above him. But that does not affect the elegance or relaxed swing that the highly acclaimed, and eventually wealthy, Nelson Riddle lent to crude compositions. His collaboration with the piano virtuoso Oscar Peterson - who never omitted to play a number if he could show off his amazingly nimble fingers by doing so - is clearly of real benefit in the slow numbers: the melodies are more recognizable, Peterson's unwavering sense of time is even more asserted, and his imagination is called upon. This LP is a potpourri which emphasises on evergreens composed by Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, right up to Kurt Weill, whereby the children's song "Someday My Prince Will Come" swings wonderfully, and the Benny Goodman classic "Goodbye" provides a worthy finale to this elaborate recording from 1963. It also offers a wonderful opportunity to put the record on the turntable, pour yourself a glass or two of good red wine - and just enjoy the music!." Recording: November 1963 at Radio Recorders Studio, Los Angeles, by Rafael Valentin Production: Jim Davis." "The Trio & The Orchestra" - Oscar Peterson (p); Nelson Riddle (arr, cond); Ray Brown (b); Ed Thigpen (dr) and orchestra & strings." standard sleeve

JAZZ: When Oscar Brown died at the age of 78 in 2005, one journalist at least, from The New York Times, was unsure as to how to describe the artist to whom America had just bid a final farewell. To write in his obituary that he was a jazz singer seemed too platitudinous, because Brown didn't just sing his songs, he performed them. But it would have been just as wrong to honour him as a jazz songwriter, despite his collaborations with Miles Davis and Max Roach, because he was more closely associated with gospel, folk and blues. His vocal qualities lie in a recitative-like, dry declamation, sharp as a knife, as is clearly heard in "Work Song". The pain brought on by life's adversities can be cried out internally even if you appear to remain unaffected outwardly ("But I Was Cool"). A portion of sarcasm is necessary when the singsong of a slave trader constantly calls for higher bids ("Bid 'Em In"), and when a babbling child can pester its daddy with both banal and existential questions ("Dat Dere"). The generously manned band does not often play all together as in the springy "Signifyin' Monkey". Here we have just a few chords on the piano ("Watermelon Man"), there a gently plucked guitar ("Brown Baby"), or a quiet pulsating rhythm ("Afro Blue") - very often not much more was needed for a sin and soul performance by Oscar Brown, who, by the way, and so typically American, regarded himself as an Entertainer.." Recording: June - October 1960." "Sin & Soul" - Oscar Brown Jr. (voc); Phil Bodner (sax); Billy Butterfield (tp); Floyd Morris (p); Don Arnone (g); George Duvivier (b); Osie Johnson (dr); a.o.." standard sleeve

JAZZ: This 1964 studio session features the Oscar Peterson Trio with bassist Ray Brown and drummer Ed Thigpen and is one of the best and last recordings Oscar Peterson made on Verve. The music is mostly pop songs of the day, including bossa nova tunes and film themes with emphasis placed squarely on the melodies. Even in their lightest moments, though, the group demonstrates some of the qualities that made it among the most influential piano trios in jazz, a group that could generate tremendous rhythmic energy and a sense of developing musical detail. Re-mastered and released on the New audiophile sensation developed by JVC known as K2HD it is a testament to the brilliance of this jazz trio.

JAZZ: Oscar Peterson's landmark meeting with Milt Jackson in the mid 1960's produced the very successful album entitled "Very Tall The Oscar Peterson Trio with Milt Jackson", which is a well-known album. This newer recording entitled The Very Tall Band is a reference to that famous album and is a chance to hear 3 Jazz masters late in their careers. They've played and recorded together on a number of occasions since then, joined by Ray Brown more often than not, but these live tracks recorded at the Blue Note are among their most satisfying sessions. Contains the songs "When Summer Comes", "Nature Boy", "Sometimes I am Happy" and many more. This recording has been mastered by the new Ultra High Definition 32-Bit Mastering process, which creates an unbelievable sound surpassing other formats.

JAZZ: This rare Oscar Moore recording was one of the few he made in stereo. Recorded for Omega in 1957, it combines Oscar with Leroy Vinegar on bass. This remained unreleased in all other formats due to some problems in the recording. It seems that Oscar accompanied himself via overdubbing. Something went wrong. The result was mud. However, with digital enhancement, the sound has been recovered and everything can now be heard. This is some fine Oscar Moore playing, which no fan of jazz guitar will want to miss.
