GOOD ROCKIN' BROWN (Stock on hand: 1) |
CD: $19.98 (US) - ($17.98 with *discount) | ACE - UK |
10/7/2005 | |
| OLDIES: What better way to inaugurate Ace's series of CDs, taken directly from the original acetates of King and De Luxe Records, than with 24 of the classic early recordings of one of R&B's most legendary names? With the exception of 2 tracks (for which the acetates did not survive), this contains at least one version of every track from every session that Roy Brown cut during 1947. It's long been believed that most of these versions were destroyed in a warehouse fire in 1948. They are being heard publicly for the first time since they were recorded! | |||||

BEST OF THE WAND YEARS (Stock on hand: 1) |
CD: $19.98 (US) - ($17.98 with *discount) | KENT - UK |
3/6/2009 | |
| SOUL: Kent is still finding new vintage material from Maxine's Wand years and there are three previously unheard tracks on this 28 track compilation. Two tracks are from CDs on the Ace label never before on Kent and the dancers' favorite "Am I Falling In Love" is on a solo Maxine CD for the first time. "Why Did I Choose You" is a great new uptempo dance find to accompany the original Kent-released Northern Soul tracks like "It's Torture" and "I Want A Guarantee". Northern classics "One In A Million" and "Let Me Give You My Lovin'" are on here, side by side with Maxine's Brill Building ballads "Oh No Not My Baby" and "It's Gonna Be Alright". | |||||

LIVE AT THE GREEN MILL (Stock on hand: 2) |
CD: $15.98 (US) - ($14.38 with *discount) | DELMARK |
10/23/2007 | |
| JAZZ: In reviews of Ari's first two Delmark albums, Ultimate Frontier (DMK 486) and Venus (DMK 504), writers often used phrases like "overwhelming emotional immediacy" (Down Beat), "rare depth of feeling" (Jazziz) and "raw emotion and ferocity" (JazzTimes). Ari carries on the Chicago tenor sax and the AACM traditions. He melds them into his own voice and no matter how far out he takes the music it still remains accessible and enjoyable. Live at The Green Mill features the same rhythm section Ari's been working with for over ten years - brother Kirk Brown (piano), Yosef Ben Israel (drums), Avreeayl Ra (drums). Also featured on a few tracks are Pharez Whitted (trumpet) and Dr. Cuz (percussion). | |||||

CD: $15.98 (US) - ($14.38 with *discount) | DELMARK |
4/23/2002 | |
| BLUES: The foundation of rhythm & blues was set during the war years. Big bands were stripped down to smaller horn lead combos driven by a jumping rhythm section tailor-made for dancing. In this setting the "blues shouter" was an absolute necessity. While Big Joe Turner is the father of the style, the flamboyant Wynonie Harris popularized the shouter's role as a leather-lunged hell raiser. Two singers followed in Harris' footsteps: Piney Brown & Eddie Mack. This 22 track collection from 1948-50 contains 7 never before released cuts, and features Willis Jackson & Bobby Smith. | |||||

| BLUES: Cowboy Roy Brown was born in Arkansas on April 20, 1875, the son of a preacher. He and his sister learned to play guitar from their father who they accompanied when he played violin in church. In his twenties, Roy visited St Louis during the 1904 World's Fair and later moved to Kansas City, then Marion, Illinois and then drifted to Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Deadwood, South Dakota. Roy eventually returned to St Louis where he was a street singer performing with his guitar and catalog of blues, folk and cowboy tunes. Roy and his band - a guitar named "Baby" and a kazoo named "Leon" - performed cowboy standards and popular tunes. All of which can be heard here on this collection of previously unissued mid-'50s recordings. | |||||
