This is a 24 track definitive compilation of the ultimate one-shot garage band - San Jose, California's Count Five. It's a fresh look at the teenage combo that sent the timeless teen angst anthem "Psychotic Reaction" into the U.S. Top 10 in the summer of 1966. For the first time on a C5 reissue, the original master tapes have been used (previously it was a mixture of appalling fake stereo and mediocre disc dubs), and the Big Beat sleuths even located the original session tape of "Psychotic," which has a completely different ending. Tape research threw up further alternate takes, unedited versions and fabulous unreleased material from the vaults of Double Shot Records, for whom the C5 recorded a classic LP and several great singles, all of which are here.

Yes, this is WIK 1 - the very first Chiswick album, from 1977. The Count Bishops, along with Dr. Feelgood, were the hottest R&B band of the mid-'70s. This CD features the young Julian "Jools" Holland on piano on one track. Previously unreleased on CD, this mid-price 12 track issue comes in a cardboard replica of the LP sleeve.

The name Count Basie is synonymous with a special powerhouse big band sound. Here the Count Basie Orchestra can be heard performing 'live' at the famous Chicago Bluenote during the latter part of 1955 and early 1956. All the numbers are up tempo and swinging. Joe Williams vocals can be heard on three numbers, including a particularly fine version of "Teach Me Tonight." The Arrangers were an all important part of the Basie orchestra when reformed in 1951, but it was not until 1954 that Thad Jones joined the ranks to add many contributions. The orchestra of the 50s is regarded by many of the fans as the best period. Certainly, the popularity of recordings from this time has contributed to this belief; as also, the frequent tours undertaken by the Count and his men added to the number of followers of the orchestra, and to hear and see the Basie band in concert became almost an annual event in Europe. Previously unissued extracts from one such performance are captured on this recording...enjoy. The Count Basie orchestra needs no introduction, suffice it to say if a poll was taken of the all time best Jazz bands Basie would always feature in the top five and there are many who would place them at number one. The vocalist on this CD is the great Joe Williams who sings some more unusual numbers including a jumping version of Shake Rattle And Roll. The band is in its heyday, at the peak of its form and features four complete National Guard Shows from 1957 which include several of the Count's best known numbers but is graced with a good selection of his lesser known works.
