| EASY LISTENING: Here are the first two of several easy listening albums that Chet Baker fronted for World Pacific Records in the mid-60. Essentially a hipper version of Herb Alpert's Tijuana Brass, it featured many of L.A.'s most high-profile sessioneers of the 1960s, several of whom also played in the TJB. Some of the most notable players here include Tom Scott, Herb Ellis, Don Peake, Victor Feldman, Julius Wechter, Dennis Budimir, Al Casey and notable "Wrecking Crew" alumni Tommy Tedesco, Lyle Ritz, Frank Capp and Bill Pitman. "A Taste Of Tequila" and "Hats Off!" were arranged by Jack Nitzsche. None of the Mariachi Brass albums have ever been reissued. | |||||

MORE QUESTIONS THAN ANSWERS (Stock on hand: 2) |
CD: $15.98 (US) - ($14.38 with *discount) | DELMARK |
3/22/2005 | |
| JAZZ: This is the solo debut by Chicago pianist/synthesist Jim Baker, previously recorded in settings ranging from duets to Ken Vandermark's Territory Bands, and from third-stream projects (with Guillermo Gregorio) to rock groups (with Nicholas Tremulis). Having previously collaborated with reedists (Fred Anderson, Kyle Bruckmann, Nicole Mitchell, Ken Vandermark, Mars Williams) and with various trios (bassists Harrison Bankhead, Josh Abrams; cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm; percussionists Avreeyal Ra, Michael Zerang), Baker set himself the seemingly-paradoxical task of recording an album of free improvisations -- on both piano and analogue synthesizer -- which would have a "somewhat or somehow tuneful" character. Baker has been described as "deeply unusual." | |||||

| SOUL: Sam Baker's voice was one of the most distinctive and expressive of the southern soul genre and his falsetto bursts were simply thrilling. His most consistent period was from 1965-1969 when he was produced by WLAC radio DJ John Richbourg for the Nashville label Sound Stage 7. This album is a complete collection of his historic Sound Stage 7 recordings with informative liner notes by John Ridley. | |||||

CHET BAKER & CREW (180 GRAM VINYL) (Stock on hand: 2) |
LP: $55.98 (US) - ($50.38 with *discount) | PURE PLEASURE RECORDS |
8/6/2010 | |
| JAZZ: (2-LP set) The numbers heard on Chet Baker & Crew were among a prolific flurry of recordings Baker was involved in during the last week of July 1956 - fresh from an extended European stay. The crew on these sides includes Phil Urso (tenor sax), Bobby Timmons (piano), Jimmy Bond (bass), Peter Littman (drums), and of course Baker (trumpet/vocals). The band members take full advantage of their individual roles and abilities as soloists to really stretch out on "Slightly Above Moderate" and the Urso-credited composition "Halema" - named after Baker's wife. The chemistry of cool that flows between Urso and Baker is perhaps at its finest during the seamless exchange heard on "Worryin' the Life Out of Me." Timmons also boasts notable contributions throughout. His playful and scampering style dresses up the bluesy "Lucius Lu" and "Line for Lyons," among others. The latter is also notable as it contains the sole Baker vocal on this set. | |||||

MILESTONES (Stock on hand: 21) |
CD: $11.98 (US) - ($10.78 with *discount) | CHOICE |
11/17/2009 | |
| JAZZ: Chet was a big admirer of Miles Davis, who he described as "the most forward looking trumpet player". Heard here is a stunning tribute from one trumpet master to another, very different trumpet master. "Deep in a Drea", the van Heusen and de Lange classic has become indelibly linked to Chet through the book of the same name by author James Gavin. Chet's repertoire was seemingly inexhaustible as evidenced here by his renditions of "Once upon a Summertime" and "Stella by Starlight" in contrast to jazz originals by Jimmy Heath and Dizzy Gillespie. The tracks were cut in the early sixties during Chet's long period spent in Europe and feature the brilliant playing of altoist Jacques Peltzer, pianist Amadeo Tommasi, bassist Larry Ridley and others. | |||||

JAZZ ROCK GUITAR (Stock on hand: 112) |
CD: $16.98 (US) - ($15.28 with *discount) | STEFAN GROSSMAN'S GUITAR WORKSHOP |
4/16/2013 | |
| JAZZ: Born in Louisville, Kentucky in 1925, Mickey Baker first noticed music via youthful street jug bands. He lived for 87 years. Mickey recorded and wrote the perennial hit Love Is Strange with Mickey & Sylvia. In his later years Mickey went back to his roots of blues, jazz and rock. His solo blues playing took him around Europe and Africa. On his last tour of Africa he was joined by the bass player Alex Sanders and Mickey's show was able to expand to the full gambit of his musical experiences - from country blues to jazz. During this tour Alex and Mickey started to compose together and decided to try and record an album that would highlight their sounds and explorations. This is in fact the first solo jazz rock guitar album that Mickey ever recorded and it is full of intriguing and wonderful sounds from a rendition of Rachmaninoff's Prelude In C# Minor to the disco sound of Alexander's Funk Time to the 7/4 of Ouagadougou. Mickey has combined his skills of being one of the finest jazz guitarists with those of a guitar teacher and prepared a tab/music booklet for this project. This booklet is included on the enhanced CD as a PDF file. | |||||
