COUNTRY & WESTERN: Few names are as synonymous with the guitar as that of Chet Atkins. He set the standard by which generations of country fingerstyle guitarists have benn measured. But his influence transcends regions and genres. The sound of 20th century guitar would not be the same without the impact of this gentle genius who was at the height of his influence and creative powers when the performances presented in this video were captured. The much travelled "Mr. Guitar" is seen playing in this video collection everywhere from Nashville to Norway. His signature Gretsch Tennesseean guitar, on which Chet made exquisitely effective use of its Bigsby vibrato bar, is heard in all its sweet, reverb-laden glory on many of these clips. But Chet, whose versitility embraces all styles of guitar, is also seen playing a classical model and a Martin dreadnaught. No matter what he plays, the sound produced becomes a distinct auditory fingerprint of the man known in Nashville as C.G.P. (Certified Guitar Player). The relaxed mastery evident in this video explains why Chet was honored in 1993 with a Lifetime Achievement Award Grammy: "For his peerless fingerstyle guitar technique, his extensive creative legacy documented on more than one hundred albums, and his influential work on both sides of the recording console as a primary architect of the Nashville sound." NTSC all region, 58 minutes.

FOLK/BLUEGRASS: For more than 40 years, the name of Chet Atkins has been associated with the finest Nashville-based fingerstyle guitar sounds. Even those records he did not play on showed his influence. Yet his own artistic growth never ceased, as is evident in this second volume of Vestapol's chronological documentation of Chet's career. We see this gentle genius exploring the music of Bob Dylan (Don't Think Twice It's All Right), marching band composer John Phillip Sousa (Stars and Stripes Forever), pop standards (Lover Come Back) and progressive funk (Knuckle Buster). Chet's tonal palette draws varied colors from electric guitars, nylon-strung classics, and even a resophonic guitar. Foremost in this collection are his traditional strengths as a tasteful soloist, but we also see him swap licks with the fiery Jerry Reed and Larry Carlton. The overall impression made by these performances is one of a master quietly demonstrating his continued primacy in his field and doing so with a calm assurance unabated by needless grandstanding. NTSC all region, 71 minutes.

COUNTRY & WESTERN: Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed in concert together. What a treat!! These two masters of the guitar complemented each other so well that it is hard to imagine one without the other! Chet Atkins, the subdued quiet picker who thrilled at performing the fast, frantic instrumentals written by his energetic alter ego, Jerry Reed. Their careers intertwined for most of forty years. Chet, about 12 years the senior, had perfected his style by the time a young Jerry Reed was being inspired by Chet's records. After getting a start in the music business in his native Georgia, Jerry moved to Nashville in the early 1960's and quickly found work as a session guitarist and songwriter. He attracted the attention of Chet, who by then was an established record producer for RCA, and a prolific recording artist in his own right. Chet "Mr. Guitar" Atkins recognized Jerry's unique ability to write and perform intricate fingerstyle guitar instrumentals and quickly started recording Jerry's tunes on his own albums. By 1967 Chet had signed Jerry Reed to RCA, and with Chet as producer, Jerry turned out hits like Guitar Man, The Claw and Amos Moses. Jerry's LP, "Explores Guitar Country" produced by Chet, set the stage for their collaboration on two LP's in the 1970's, "Me and Jerry" (Grammy award winner), and "Me and Chet" from which came great tunes like "Jerry's Breakdown" and their definitive version of "Cannonball Rag." Chet continued to feature Reed instrumentals on his albums, and Jerry continued to record and tour while finding time to act in such diverse films as "Smokey and the Bandit" and "The Waterboy." NTSC all region, 79 minutes.

JAZZ: Chet Baker was the face of 1950s West Coast jazz. His sublime trumpet-playing combined with film-star good looks made him a star. His recordings for Pacific Jazz were the very apex of his career, and often considered the finest of these were the sessions that produced "Chet Baker & Crew". Six years later Pacific sold this set of out-takes to Modern. Featuring saxophonist Phil Urso and pianist Bobby Timmons, these are every bit as good as the originally released versions. This updated 2013 version has been remastered from source tapes, has fresh sleeve notes and is packaged in a digipack with new artwork. Tracks are the same but in a different running order.

EASY LISTENING: Here are the first two of several easy listening albums that Chet Baker fronted for World Pacific Records in the mid-60. Essentially a hipper version of Herb Alpert's Tijuana Brass, it featured many of L.A.'s most high-profile sessioneers of the 1960s, several of whom also played in the TJB. Some of the most notable players here include Tom Scott, Herb Ellis, Don Peake, Victor Feldman, Julius Wechter, Dennis Budimir, Al Casey and notable "Wrecking Crew" alumni Tommy Tedesco, Lyle Ritz, Frank Capp and Bill Pitman. "A Taste Of Tequila" and "Hats Off!" were arranged by Jack Nitzsche. None of the Mariachi Brass albums have ever been reissued.

JAZZ: This is the solo debut by Chicago pianist/synthesist Jim Baker, previously recorded in settings ranging from duets to Ken Vandermark's Territory Bands, and from third-stream projects (with Guillermo Gregorio) to rock groups (with Nicholas Tremulis). Having previously collaborated with reedists (Fred Anderson, Kyle Bruckmann, Nicole Mitchell, Ken Vandermark, Mars Williams) and with various trios (bassists Harrison Bankhead, Josh Abrams; cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm; percussionists Avreeyal Ra, Michael Zerang), Baker set himself the seemingly-paradoxical task of recording an album of free improvisations -- on both piano and analogue synthesizer -- which would have a "somewhat or somehow tuneful" character. Baker has been described as "deeply unusual."

COUNTRY & WESTERN: (7-CD box set with hardcover book) Many consider the albums included here (1955-60) as Chet's definitive work. He created a vast new audience with "In Three Dimensions," "Stringin' Along With Chet Atkins," "Finger-Style Guitar," "Hi-Fi In Focus" and "Chet Atkins At Home." This also includes "Mister Guitar," "Chet Atkins' Workshop," and cuts from "Chet Atkins In Hollywood" appear here in their original 1958 versions. Other numbers only appeared on singles or EPs, and 16 RCA Victor masters and alternate takes here were previously unissued. Also includes tracks from 2 abandoned projects: "My Brother Sings" (with Jim Atkins). 20 SESAC cuts (never commercially available) and the 1959 "Hum And Strum."

COUNTRY & WESTERN: At a time when rock 'n' roll-crazy teenagers in the USA and elsewhere were dancing their feet off to the beat of Elvis Presley and Bill Haley, probably no one was interested as to where this music actually originated. The focal point of the folk movement was Tennessee: it was here that everyone came who had used their grandfathers' songs and fiddle tunes to create the pop-oriented Nashville Sound, a sound which became American music's trademark and export hit. Chet Atkins is one of the people who helped to create this special sound and who kept an Argus-eyed watch on its originality and development. In addition to the recordings he made in his own studio, he was also a producer and studio guitarist for RCA. This album features Chet Atkins as "Mister Guitar", who - as a soloist - only allowed a small and highly discreet rhythm group to accompany him. The result is a refreshingly pure and unadulterated steel-string sound without frills and padding and so has little in common with the commercial country music of the masses. With his relaxed, technically perfect and highly variable playing technique, Atkins shows us what the New World has to offer in the way of folk music: highly melodic numbers which delight the ear with the simplest of means.." Recording: 1959 in Nashville, Tennessee, by Bob Farris and Bill Porter Production: Chet Atkins." "Mister Guitar" - Chet Atkins (g), and band." standard sleeve

SOUL: Sam Baker's voice was one of the most distinctive and expressive of the southern soul genre and his falsetto bursts were simply thrilling. His most consistent period was from 1965-1969 when he was produced by WLAC radio DJ John Richbourg for the Nashville label Sound Stage 7. This album is a complete collection of his historic Sound Stage 7 recordings with informative liner notes by John Ridley.

JAZZ: First released under the title "Playboys" in 1956 it was then re-released under the title "Picture Of Heath" in 1961 perhaps owing to the fact it carried the same name as a popular men's magazine. This was the third session together of the dynamic duo of Chet Baker and Art Pepper the previous two having been unequivocal successes. Baker and Pepper have an instinctual rapport that yields outstanding interplay. These thoroughly enjoyable and often high-energy sides are perfect for bop connoisseurs as well as mainstream jazz listeners.

JAZZ: Chet was a big admirer of Miles Davis, who he described as "the most forward looking trumpet player". Heard here is a stunning tribute from one trumpet master to another, very different trumpet master. "Deep in a Drea", the van Heusen and de Lange classic has become indelibly linked to Chet through the book of the same name by author James Gavin. Chet's repertoire was seemingly inexhaustible as evidenced here by his renditions of "Once upon a Summertime" and "Stella by Starlight" in contrast to jazz originals by Jimmy Heath and Dizzy Gillespie. The tracks were cut in the early sixties during Chet's long period spent in Europe and feature the brilliant playing of altoist Jacques Peltzer, pianist Amadeo Tommasi, bassist Larry Ridley and others.
