BOSS TENOR (Stock on hand: 9) |
LP: $12.98 (US) - ($11.68 with *discount) | ORIGINAL JAZZ CLASSICS |
2/6/2009 | |
| JAZZ: At Prestige, Gene Ammons basically did two types of sessions: a jamming situation with several other all-star horns; or a quartet format featuring a top-flight rhythm section behind him. Whatever the setting, "Jug," as he was nicknamed, displayed that dominant trait held in common with other giants in the grand history of his chosen instrument, the tenor saxophone-the ability to tell a story. Here are the blues, the ballads, Charlie Parker's "Confirmation," and Eddie Heywood's "Canadian Sunset." The latter had been a hit for its pianist-composer and was again for Ammons. An added feature here is the addition of jazz-oriented conga player, Ray Barretto, to the piano, bass, and drums of Tommy Flanagan, Doug Watkins, and Arthur Taylor. OJC 297 (Prestige 7180). | |||||

| SOUL: Depite being virtually unknown in their USA homeland, the upbeat pop-soul of Johnny Johnson and the Bandwagon was a regular feature of the UK charts in the late 60s and early 70s. Consistent touring and promotion of their new releases kept Johnny & Co in the spotlight from 1968 through the first half of the 1970s, and with and without the Bandwagon Johnny Johnson scored more than half a dozen UK Top 40 hits in a four year period - considerably more than many of more famous soul contemporaries. | |||||

| SOUL: Roy Lee Johnson is best known for writing "Mr Moonlight" for Doctor Feelgood and the Interns, which was covered by the Beatles. He made some stunning records for a variety of labels down through the 60s and 70s. His dynamite live performance convinced Jimmy Johnson to record him at Muscle Shoals Sound and sign the record to Stax. It is this rare 1973 masterpiece that we are reissuing here. The album is a brilliant collection of funk, punctuated with a couple of shots of fine southern soul. "The Dryer" and "Patch It Up" are funk club classics and make this album sought-after by collectors. "I Can't Stand This Loneliness" and "Something Special" are fine soul moments that showcase his fine voice. | |||||

This rare album has now attained cult status and is reissued here on CD for the first time, with one bonus track -- the previously unissued "Steal Away." Respected author Steve Tracy contributes an affectionate note giving the full background to these sessions. | |||||
