| DAVIS, MILES |
BAGS' GROOVE (Stock on hand: 2) |
LP: $12.98 (US) - ($11.68 with *discount) | ORIGINAL JAZZ CLASSICS |
2/6/2009 | |
| JAZZ: More than 30 years ago Miles Davis recorded this music in the company of such other giants as Milt Jackson, Thelonious Monk, Kenny Clarke, Percy Heath, Sonny Rollins, and Horace Silver. Today the music they made is regarded as classic. "Bags' Groove," in two versions, is a perfect illustration of the improvisatory process, and the various delights that can develop from take to take; the date with Rollins reveals his development toward major status. It is hard to believe that having heard these 1954 recordings, the critics could have called Davis's triumph at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1955 a "comeback." With Milt Jackson, Thelonious Monk, Percy Heath, Kenny Clarke, Sonny Rollins, Horace Silver. Tracks: Bags' Groove (2 takes), Airegin, Oleo, But Not for Me (2 takes), Doxy. | |||||

SAXOPHONE COLOSSUS (Stock on hand: 12) |
LP: $12.98 (US) - ($11.68 with *discount) | ORIGINAL JAZZ CLASSICS |
2/6/2009 | |
| JAZZ: One of the pivotal recordings in bringing about the widespread acceptance of Sonny Rollins as a major figure, Saxophone Colossus inspired critics to write scholarly analyses and fans to revel in the hard-swinging invention, humor, and tender-strength balladry. Up to this album, while most musicians recognized Rollins as one of the new influential forces in the jazz of the Fifties, most critics were carping at Rollins or damning him with faint praise. "St. Thomas," a traditional West Indian melody which Mal Waldron remembered as "The Carnival," was recorded by many artists after Sonny introduced it here, and it remains a jazz standard today. The contributions of Tommy Flanagan's elegant swing, Doug Watkins's steady lift, and Max Roach's most musical accompaniment and soloing (hear "Blue 7") make this a landmark album. With Tommy Flanagan, Max Roach, Doug Watkins. Tracks: St. Thomas, You Don't Know What Love Is, Strode Rode, Moritat, Blue 7. | |||||
| DAVIS QUINTET, MILES |
WORKIN' (Stock on hand: 8) |
LP: $12.98 (US) - ($11.68 with *discount) | ORIGINAL JAZZ CLASSICS |
4/10/2009 | |
| JAZZ: Undeniably one of the best small bands in the history of jazz, the Miles Davis quintet of the mid-1950s made history at the Cafe Bohemia on Manhattan's Barrow Street and in the New Jersey studio of Rudy Van Gelder for Prestige. This is the third in a series of four LPs taped in two marathon studio sessions, done in the style of sets at the Bohemia and producing music of high energy and immediacy. Preceded by Cookin' (OJC 128) and Relaxin' (OJC 190), Workin' is a mix of standards and originals, up-tempos and ballads, and a trio number, "Ahmad's Blues." The music this quintet made in the mid-Fifties period will live forever: the excitement of the emerging John Coltrane; the informed, melodic swing of Red Garland; the tremendous snap and pop of the rhythm trio of Garland, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones; and Miles's poignancy and intense swing. With John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers, Philly Joe Jones. Tracks: It Never Entered My Mind, Four, In Your Own Sweet Way, The Theme (2 takes), Trane's Blues, Ahmad's Blues, Half Nelson. | |||||
| AMMONS, GENE |
BOSS TENOR (Stock on hand: 3) |
LP: $12.98 (US) - ($11.68 with *discount) | ORIGINAL JAZZ CLASSICS |
2/6/2009 | |
| JAZZ: At Prestige, Gene Ammons basically did two types of sessions: a jamming situation with several other all-star horns; or a quartet format featuring a top-flight rhythm section behind him. Whatever the setting, "Jug," as he was nicknamed, displayed that dominant trait held in common with other giants in the grand history of his chosen instrument, the tenor saxophone-the ability to tell a story. Here are the blues, the ballads, Charlie Parker's "Confirmation," and Eddie Heywood's "Canadian Sunset." The latter had been a hit for its pianist-composer and was again for Ammons. An added feature here is the addition of jazz-oriented conga player, Ray Barretto, to the piano, bass, and drums of Tommy Flanagan, Doug Watkins, and Arthur Taylor. OJC 297 (Prestige 7180).Tracks: Hittin' the Jug, Close Your Eyes, My Romance, Canadian Sunset, Blue Ammons, Confirmation, Savoy. | |||||

WAY OUT WEST (Stock on hand: 29) |
LP: $12.98 (US) - ($11.68 with *discount) | ORIGINAL JAZZ CLASSICS |
2/6/2009 | |
| JAZZ: Over his long and distinguished career, Sonny Rollins has made many dozens of albums. Among those recorded during the Fifties, Prestige's Moving Out (OJC 58) and Saxophone Colossus (OJC 291), Blue Note's A Night at the Village Vanguard, Riverside's The Sound of Sonny (OJC 29), and Way Out West on Contemporary qualify as all-time Rollins classics. The session for Way Out West, Rollins's first ever in California, was called for 3 a.m. to accommodate everyone's busy schedules. Sonny, who could never be accused of overstatement, announced after four hours of recording: "I'm hot now." With Ray Brown, Shelly Manne. Tracks: I'm an Old Cowhand, Solitude; Come, Gone; Wagon Wheels, There Is No Greater Love, Way Out West. | |||||
| PEPPER, ART |
MEETS THE RHYTHM SECTION (Stock on hand: 4) |
LP: $12.98 (US) - ($11.68 with *discount) | ORIGINAL JAZZ CLASSICS |
7/24/2009 | |
| JAZZ: Album notes don't always tell the whole story. Contemporary president Lester Koenig, who rightly felt that Art had yet to record with musicians who were his equal, wanted to take advantage of Miles Davis's quintet being in L.A. But Pepper hadn't been playing for several months, and his horn was in a state of disrepair. To minimize anxiety, the session was kept secret from Art until the last minute. But Pepper always rose to a challenge: he taped up his dried-out cork, arrived for the date, and proceeded to record an album widely considered the most important of his career. With Red Garland, Paul Chambers, Philly Joe Jones. Tracks: You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To, Red Pepper Blues, Imagination, Waltz Me Blues, Straight Life, Jazz Me Blues, Tin Tin Deo, Star Eyes, Birks 'Works. | |||||
| ROLLINS, SONNY |
SONNY ROLLINS & THE CONTEMPORARY LEADERS (Stock on hand: 6) |
LP: $12.98 (US) - ($11.68 with *discount) | ORIGINAL JAZZ CLASSICS |
2/6/2009 | |
| JAZZ: This was Sonny's second Contemporary album and his second West Coast session, a year and a half after the historic Way Out West. Jazz labels acquire "personalities" not only from the musical tastes of the owner/recording director but also from the roster of musicians signed to the company. The "Contemporary Sound"-every bit as distinctive as the competing "Blue Note Sound," "Prestige Sound," and "Pacific Jazz Sound"-was largely a product of the work by Hampton Hawes, Barney Kessel, and Shelly Manne, all of whom had won Down Beat awards for their respective instruments and recorded as "The Poll Winners." With Hampton Hawes, Barney Kessel, Leroy Vinnegar, Shelly Manne, Victor FeldmanSonny Morgan, and others. Tracks: I've Told Ev'ry Little Star, Rock-a-bye Your Baby with a Dixie Melody, How High the Moon, You, I've Found a New Baby, Alone Together, In the Chapel in the Moonlight, The Song Is You. | |||||

| EVANS TRIO, BILL |
HOW MY HEART SINGS (Stock on hand: 11) |
LP: $12.98 (US) - ($11.68 with *discount) | ORIGINAL JAZZ CLASSICS |
2/6/2009 | |
| JAZZ: Bill Evans's return to full activity in 1962 came almost a year after his celebrated trio recordings at the Village Vanguard. Just ten days after that classic "live" session, bassist Scott LaFaro had died in a highway accident. Evans, deeply shaken, eventually reformed his trio with the same drummer (Paul Motian) and Chuck Israels on bass. Their first visit to a studio was for a dual purpose: to make an all-ballad-tempo album, Moonbeams, and this "normal" set at the same time. It was producer Orrin Keepnews's thought that recording eight slow numbers in a row might prove unduly enervating; accordingly, the total two-album repertoire was interspersed over three days of recording and the net result was two excellent additions to the Evans catalog. With Chuck Israels, Paul Motian. Tracks: How My Heart Sings, I Should Care, In Your Own Sweet Way (take 1), Walking Up, Summertime, 34 Skidoo, Ev'rything I Love, Show-Type Tune. | |||||

| COLTRANE, JOHN |
THE LAST TRANE (Stock on hand: 3) |
LP: $12.98 (US) - ($11.68 with *discount) | ORIGINAL JAZZ CLASSICS |
3/6/2009 | |
| JAZZ: The Last Trane represents the final studio session for Prestige in the productive recording relationship between John Coltrane and Red Garland. Often with trumpeter Donald Byrd on board, the two made a succession of dates in 1957 and '58 in which Coltrane's genius could be heard developing. His celebrated job with Thelonious Monk had deepened his harmonic understanding and reinforced his determination to explore beyond the boundaries of standard jazz improvisation. With Donald Byrd, Red Garland, Paul Chambers, Louis Hayes, Earl May, Arthur Taylor. In his remarkable blues solo on "By the Numbers," Coltrane both affirms his roots and announces a new direction. Comparison with the other slow blues, "Slowtrane," made eight months earlier, is instructive. Tracks:Lover, Slowtrane, By the Numbers, Come Rain or Come Shine. | |||||
