JAZZ: Album contains definitive 1953 recordings of clarinetist Lewis, who led the most authentic New Orleans jazz band. It's a New Orleans brass band that's come inside to play with a full rhythm section - relevant in spite of the vintage. It's blues, gospel, ragtime, and pop before rock. It struts and it stomps. These are the first studio recordings of the Lewis New Orleans Band that toured colleges, clubs and festivals and later settled in at Preservation Hall.

JAZZ: Jazz clarinetist Albert Nicholas played with King Oliver and Jelly Roll Morton in the 1920s, Louis Armstrong in the '30s and was a major figure in the traditional jazz revival in New York in the '40s. Pianist Art Hodes was also on the scene in the '20s and recorded for numerous labels including many successful sides with Nicholas for Blue Note in the '40s. In a review of the original LP of this 1959 session Brian Rust said "One is left without any doubt about Nicholas being far and away the greatest living jazz clarinetist." - The Gramophone. Hodes "plays with a darting vivacity which adds a stimulating sense of excitement to even the more mellow easygoing pieces." High Fidelity Magazine. (Previously deleted: 8/1/10. JAZZ: NORO was organized in 1967 by pianist Lars Edegran, who became interested in playing ragtime music after finding a great number of orchestrated turn-of-the-century rags in the John Robichaux Collection at Tulane University's Archive of New Orleans Jazz. The idea was to follow the composer's intention, but add the New Orleans rhythm & swing that is lacking in many ragtime recordings. Violinist William Russell adds greatly to the orchestra's sound

JAZZ: Pianist Art Hodes' career lasted eight decades, starting in the late 20s and continuing into the 90s. Friar's Inn, near Van Buren and Wabash, was where the legendary New Orleans Rhythm Kings played Chicago in the early 20s. Their series of classic recordings for Gennett ushered in the early Chicago decade of jazz recordings. Hodes had long wanted to do a recording in honor of that early group and brought George Brunis and Volly DeFaut, both members of NORK in the 20s, to the studio for this 1972 session. On CD for the first time, this release features Barney Bigard and Barrett Deems.

JAZZ: Paul Lingle began playing ragtime and jazz in his teens and was to continue until his death, Oct. 30, 1962. His piano training made him capable of playing classical music, but he preferred the music of Scott Joplin, Jelly Roll Morton and others of the ragtime-jazz persuasion. Lingle was an original member of the Yerba Buena Jazz Band and by the end of the '30s had become something of a legend on the West Coast. In 1953, Lingle recorded for Good Time Jazz who issued eight sides. Euphonic Records later issued three LPs of Lingle made up mostly from live recordings at the Jug Club in Oakland. Those rare LPs are long out of print, but here is the first CD featuring Paul Lingle, Live At The Jug Club.

JAZZ: 1949 and '51 recordings featuring Sidney Bechet, Muggsey Spanier, Don Ewell, Doc Evans and Miff Mole. Jazz Ltd. was a jazz club located at 11 E. Grand owned and operated by Bill and Ruth Reinhardt from 1947 into the early '70s. Bill played clarinet and led the five-piece house band at a time when many of jazz's first creators were still out there hustling gigs. This is pure swinging traditional jazz (some call it Dixieland) played by the pros. Thirteen songs include Maryland My Maryland, Egyptian Fantasy, Tin Roof Blues, High Society, Wolverine Blues, Maple Leaf rag, Charleston, Careless Love, Washington & Lee Swing and more. Also features a wonderful five minute interview with Bill and Ruth. (Previously deleted:7/1/07. Original release date:11/14/94)
