JAZZ: Accomplished in both tenor saxophone and clarinet, Jimmy Giuffre spent time in the Army Air Force Orchestra in 1944 prior to associations with the Dallas Symphony and Boyd Raeburn. Further experience with the Jimmy Dorsey Band and Buddy Rich enabled Jimmy to develop both his instrumental and writing skills. He went on to create the classic Four Brothers piece for the saxophone section (Stan Getz, Zoot Sims, Al Cohn and Serge Chaloff) of the Woody Herman Orchestra. His cool, improvisational "chamber music" style of jazz became his trademark and he became known around the world. Featured artists on this album are Kiyoshi Tokunaga (bass), Randy Kaye (percussion).

JAZZ: Multi-instrumentalist Eddie Daniels first came to prominence with the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Big Band. His swinging tenor sax won many admirers but gradually other aspects of his playing came to the fore and in the '70s his maturing clarinet work became his most pesonal voice. This beautiful interwoven collaboration (originally released in 1972) with guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli shows off the intimate side of Eddie, featuring him on clarinet, bass clarinet, flute and alto flute. It is an intriguing set with a broad range of material and styles, producing endless flow of creative musical ideas.

JAZZ: Guitarist Chuck Wayne came to prominence in the 1940's & 50's. Best known for his work with Woody Herman and George Shearing. He was also Tony Bennett's musical director from 1953-57. Joe Puma was a contemporary of Chuck and fellow guitarists Jimmy Rainey and Johnny Smith winning the Metronome New Star award in 1957. JAZZ: Zoot Sims and pianist Jimmy Rowles renewed an old musical and personal acquaintance on this album. Surprisingly, though they had played together many times, this was the first time they ever joined forces to make a record. The pair were joined by Sims' favorite rhythm team, bassist Bob Cranshaw and drummer Mickey Roker. The CD consists of old familiars and some real finds, like "Restless," which had originally been recorded in 1935 by Benny Goodman, eight years before a teenage Sims had started his 30 year career with Goodman. "Dream Dancing" is a long forgotten Cole Porter classic that Charlie Bourgeois had heard Teddi King sing at Newport the year before. A Neal Hefti instrumental, "Fred," is another, heard on a Fred Astaire TV special.

JAZZ: Jean "Toots" Thielemans virtually introduced the chromatic harmonica as a jazz instrument and his performances can be heard on some of the best selling pop records of the last century. "Images" is very much the first and best true jazz album that Thielemans made. The key musician chosen by Toots to participate was pianist Joanne Brackeen, then bassist Cecil McBee and drummer Fredie Waits. The material they selected is wide ranging - two beautiful ballads, two originals by Brackeen and some straight ahead swingers. The harmonica is never a musical obstacle to Toots, and it is a joy to listen to him interpret any mood.

JAZZ: An integral player in the so-called "West Coast Jazz" movement, Jimmy Giuffre played and recorded with the Lighthouse All Stars, the Shorty Rogers Giants, and many other top players on the Coast during those Halcyon days and was an accomplished artist on both tenor saxophone and clarinet. In 1956, he created the Jimmy Giuffre 3 with guitarist Jim Hall and bassist Ralph Pena. This was the period in which Giuffre wrote the tune for which he is best renowned - "The Train and The River" captured on this classic 1975 session. His style has remained virtually unchanged over the decades. This has been digitally remastered for CD release.

JAZZ: Originally released in 1977, this album is a bit unusual in that alto saxophonist Lee Konitz exclusively plays tenor. Featured in an intimate trio with pianist Jimmy Rowles and bassist Michael Moore, Konitz explores ten superior standards from the swing era plus a brief unaccompanied workout on the track "Tenorlee." On "Lady Be Good," both Konitz and Rowles quote liberally from the famous 1936 recording by Lester Young and Count Basie. Jim Ferguson says: "Throughout, most of the improvisations remain close in spirit to the tune at hand and feature a minimum number of choruses. Apparently influenced by Rowles and the tenor's tone and range, Konitz swings subtly, shaping one fine phrase after another. An eye opening look at Konitz from a different perspective."

VOCALS - JAZZ & POP: This classic Choice session was recorded in 1978 and finds vocalist Carol Sloane at the top of her game. She has a confidence which comes with maturity and experience and wisdom, and she puts all to good use in this scintillating collection which All Music Guide calls "Classy, polished and entertaining." The title track is (as Gary Shivers notes) "a performance that truly reflects the meaning of the song rather than a study of the melody as on June Christy's version." Although the set is entitled "Something Cool," it could easily have been "Something Hip." Her nicely balanced band spotlights the superb reed work of Norris Turney, no stranger to Cotton Tail from his years with the Duke. The rhythm section is led by pianist Benny Aronov with George Mraz on bass and Joe LaBarbera on drums.
