VOCALS - JAZZ & POP: The award winning ex-pat American who splits her time between Lodon and Colorado has become the definitive voice for a genre. By placing the art of her singing in perfect balance with the genius of the writers whose songs she performs, Stacey Has placed herself at the forefront of a small group of singers who have caught the attention of mainstream media and to whom listeners are flocing in their millions. Miss Kent has an innate understanding of how to capture the essence of a song. Her interpretation is delicate and crisp, lacking any superfluous parts. With every note Stacey elegantly bequeaths both purpose and direction, as exmplified in her soothingly intimate singing of 'Hushabye Mountain.'

JAZZ: Dr. John brings his own very personal style of New Orleans R&B to meet the raucous rattle of the Mardi Gras Indians and Donald Harrison in this contemporary slice of New Orleans musical history. Both men are in their way "the living embodiment of New Orleans culture" - Dr. John has brought his 'Night Tripper Gris Gris' to augment the Guardians of the Flame chants and tambourines with the Mardi Gras Indians inspired jazz saxophone of Donald Harrison, one of New Orleans' favorite sons. New Orleans unique milieu and underlying principles drive this session - "Coming from New Orleans it's just about having a good time with the music" says Donald and Dr. John agrees "Accidental stuff happens and it's better than anything you could plan."

JAZZ: The haunting songs of Brazil's greatest composer are the focus of this impressive gathering of performers. Featured here are Jobim classics such as Desafinado, Dindi, The Girl from Ipanema, Insensatez, So Danca Samba, Dreamer and many others. All the melodies adapt well to the contemporary jazzy idiom of today. The lilting qualities of the music facilitate interpretations of the music which are each different in their own way, with the whole creating a homogenous palate of colors and tonal shadings. The interpretations range from the sensitive vocals of Stacey Kent and Monica Vasconcelos to guitarist Nate Najar, the mellow sax of Jim Tomlinson and pianists Shirley Scott, Hector Martignon and the Brazilian Gilson.

JAZZ: The irrepressible Clark Terry, grand master of jazz, universally admired and loved, died on February 20th 2015 at the age of 94. His unique style of playing, so instantly recognizable became known throughout the world. He was as equally at home in the big bands of Charlie Barnet, Count Basie and Duke Ellington as with small groups or recording with Cecil Taylor or Thelonious Monk. His sound was an inspiration to the Duke who wrote a number of pieces specifically for him. Influenced by Louis Armstrong and Roy Eldridge, Clark in turn influenced Miles Davis and the entire school of trumpeting as well as popularizing the flugelhorn. Terry was also no mean vocalist and his blues inspired vocals which he sang in a unique wordless vocal style typified his outgoing fun loving personality. This commemoration of his genius features Terry in a variety of settings made for Candid between 1960 and 1993 with his own combos as well as those of Cecil Taylor, The Basie Alumni and Seldon Powell.

JAZZ: The cultured piano style of Kenny Barron has graced many albums in the last half century. He is an easy swinger, deeply admired for his nonpareil musicianship and innate sensitivity to the needs of his musical companions of the moment. Born in 1943 he was gigging with Philly Joe Jones at sixteen and soon playing in a band with his tenor saxophonist brother Bill. In 1962 he was hired by Dizzy Gillespie and the five year stint he had with Dizzy established him firmly on the jazz scene throughout the world. This celebration of Kenny's fifty years on that scene is marked by this program of highlights from his Candid recordings in a variety of settings. Amongst his companions are vibes star Steve Hobbs, saxophonists Bud Shank, Gary Bartz, Donald Harrison, Paquito d'Rivera and Ricky Ford as well as trumpeters Claudio Roditi, Mark Morganelli and others. Together with several of Kenny's fine original compositions, the piano duets with Barry Harris and John Hicks on show here add spice to this truly tasty offering.

BLUES: Recorded in the winter of 1960, this was the first album Otis Spann made in his tragically short life. Also on the date was Robert Lockwood, Jr., the step-son of one of the most extraordinary blues singers who ever recorded, the late Robert Johnson. Like his step-father, Robert Lockwood, Jr., also sings with biting, coruscating passion. Otis played great imaginative, meaty piano blues, complementing his highly individual and expressive vocal style.

JAZZ: At a time when the civil rights movement was starting to heat up, drummer Max Roach performed and recorded a 7-part suite dealing with black history (particularly slavery) and racism. "Driva' Man" has a powerful statement by veteran tenor Coleman Hawkins and there is valuable solo space elsewhere for trumpeter Booker Little and trombonist Julian Priester, but it is the overall performance of Abbey Lincoln that is most notable. Formerly a nightclub singer, Lincoln really came into her own under Roach's tutelage and she is a strong force throughout this intense set. On "Tryptich: Prayer / Protest / Peace," Lincoln is heard in duets with the drummer and her wrenching screams of rage are quite memorable.

JAZZ: Richard Williams represented all the very finest qualities in a musician. When he made this album in 1960, he had already worked with leaders such as Mingus and Gigi Gryce then, he went on to play in the big bands of Thad Jones, Mel Lewis, Duke Ellington and Orchestra USA. His superb musicianship meant he was a player very much in demand. Gill Evans employed him on a number of occasions as had Clark Terry. A trumpet concerto was specially written for him and he spent a number of years working on the Continent. This album also presents Leo Wright on alto sax and flute, Richard Wyands on piano, Reginald Workman on bass and Bobby Thomas on drums. The Williams/Wright partnership sets this album in a special category for it catches two important young men at the threshold of their careers.

JAZZ: Trumpeter Don Ellis' initial recording as a leader (and first of four small-group dates from the 1960-62 period) found him stretching the boundaries of bop-based jazz and experimenting a bit with time and tempo. Teamed up with Jaki Byard (who doubles on piano and alto), bassist Ron Carter and drummer Charlie Persip, Ellis (whose sound was already pretty distinctive) performs four of his unusual originals (including the 22-minute "Improvisational Suite #1") plus Byard's "Waste." Although these musical experiments failed to be influential (Ellis himself went in a different direction a few years later), the unpredictable music is still quite interesting to hear.

JAZZ: This is perhaps the most cohesive set Mingus ever made, recorded during a crisis of personnel in 1960. After many months with Mingus, Eric Dolphy and Ted Curson had decided to leave. These sessions and a few to follow for Mingus and the Jazz Artists Guild were to be their last tie with Mingus. He decided to set the mood that might resemble a night in the club, hence his announcements on the recording and the reason he wanted the lights turned out during the recording. For once, in these sessions, everyone in a Mingus unit reached and maintained that level of daring to make their instruments become extensions of themselves.

JAZZ: Cecil Taylor, like his music, is dynamic and aggressive, but in subtle ways. He moves over the piano like an acrobatic dancer, and he employs the entire keyboard. His technique of playing is a result of intensive practice of his own musical ideas. Cecil is highly conscious of the theatre, and his compositions are organized by juxtaposing elements of different moods against each other like actors on a stage. This, his first album for Candid, originally released in 1960, features Buell Neidlinger on bass, Dennis Charles on drums and Archie Shepp on tenor sax.

JAZZ: Some of soprano saxophonist Steve Lacy's most interesting recordings are his earliest ones. After spending periods of time playing with Dixieland groups and then with Cecil Taylor (which was quite a jump), Lacy made several recordings that displayed his love of Thelonious Monk's music plus his varied experiences. On this particular set originally released in 1960, Lacy's soprano contrasts well with Charles Davis' baritone (they are backed by bassist John Ore and drummer Roy Haynes) on three of the most difficult Monk tunes ("Introspection," "Played Twice," and "Criss Cross") plus two Cecil Taylor compositions and Charlie Parker's (or is it Miles Davis'?) "Donna Lee." Steve Lacy died in early 2004.

A more modern stylist (although influenced by Billie Holiday a little) than the material she performed at the time, Harrow is joined by such top mainstream players as trumpeter Buck Clayton, tenorman Buddy Tate, trombonist Dickie Wells, and pianist Dick Wellstood.

JAZZ: This 1960 album is one of flgelhornist Clark Terry's finest works. Terry had complete control over the music and, rather than have the usual jam session, he utilized an octet and arrangements by Yusef Lateef, Budd Johnson, and Al Cohn. The lineup of musicians (Jimmy Knepper, Julius Watkins, Yusef Lateef, Seldon Powell, Tommy Flanagan, Joe Benjamin, and Ed Shaughnessy) lives up to its potential, and the charts make good use of the sounds of these very individual stylists. The material, which consists of originals by Terry, Duke Jordan, Lateef, and Bob Wilber, is both rare and fresh, and the interpretations always swing.

BLUES: This solo album from 1970 features the classic bluesman Lightnin' Hopkins on eight unaccompanied solos, not only singing and playing guitar but taking some rare solos on piano (including "Lightnin's Piano Boogie"). Hopkins recorded a lot of albums in the early 1970s, and this Candid release is one of his better sets of the period, highlighted by "Take It Easy," "Mighty Crazy," and "Mister Charlie."

JAZZ: This fine musician died in May, 2005 in Europe. Benny Bailey, every inch a trumpeter, was the kind of man whose sound would improve any brass section. This record, originally released in 1960, was made shortly after Benny returned to America after touring Europe with Quincy Jones's orchestra and the ill-fated Harold Arlen blues Opera 'Free and Easy'. With the exceptions of Tommy Flanagan and Art Taylor, the men on this album (the first Bailey made under his own name in the U.S.) were part of the Quincy Jones Orchestra. Europe called Benny back soon after this Candid date, and for four decades he worked on the continent with studio orchestras as well the thrilling Kenny Clarke-Francy Boland band.

JAZZ: When Norman Granz took his touring JATP group to Japan in 1954, it did not take the musicians long to discover an amazingly talented Bud Powell-like pianist. Surprisingly, the pianist was a Japanese girl, Toshiko Akiyoshi, who was soon coaxed into a recording studio. It was not long before her fame spread to the U.S where she made a considerable impact on critics and musicians. In Nov. 1959, she married alto saxist Charlie Mariano (they have since been divorced; Toshiko is now the wife of saxist Lew Tabakin.) The husband and wife team worked together and Candid recorded them shortly after their first wedding anniversary. This album has always been one of the rarest items from the catalog.
