JAZZ: "Dexter Blows Hot & Cool" is the shining pinnacle of the Dootone jazz recordings. Gordon was the pioneer of bebop's tenor saxophone playing. His recordings of the late 40s transcribed the bebop revolution to the instrument and forged the path for the next generation; players such as John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins. He was sadly under-recorded in the first golden age of the album as he spent much of the 1950s in prison. This is one of only two albums from that time and a certified classic.

JAZZ: Perkins is one of the great lost names of jazz, a pianist of rare skills, who wrote the standard 'Groove Yard', but who died in 1958 at the age of 29 from a drug overdose. He left a small recorded legacy: three albums with Curtis Counce recorded for Contemporary, an album with Harold Land and this, his sole album as a leader. Recorded in a trio format with bassist Leroy Vinnegar and drummer Lawrence Marable it is neglected gem of bebop piano, shining out against much of the smoother output that fell under the title west coast jazz. Made up predominantly of Perkins compositions it shows that he was a loss as a writer as well as a pianist. (Previously deleted:5/1/15. Original release date:6/21/96) The original tapes gave up exceptional sound quality and we are able to expand the CD with two tracks not on the original album. One, 'Memories', has never previously been issued.

JAZZ: Counce is best known for four albums released on Contemporary Records, recorded between 1956 and 1958. His quintet featured saxophonist Harold Land and pianist Carl Perkins and was one of the finest interpreters of hard bop on the West Coast. Yet it was his final album "Exploring The Future" - made with Perkins' replacement Elmo Hope - that is a masterpiece. Eight tracks of incendiary jazz, edited down to fit the LP format, and an extravagant period piece album cover showing Curtis in a space suit. (Previously deleted:2/1/11. JAZZ: Chico Hamilton came to national prominence with the success of his records recorded for Pacific Jazz in the mid 50s. These recordings were typical of West Coast Jazz, featuring unusual instrumental line-ups, and tightly arranged music. Hamilton went onto become one of the most important drummers and band leaders in jazz. The album features tracks from three separate sessions and three different bands - firstly with Howard Roberts on guitar and George Duvivier on bass, then with Jim Hall and Duvivier again, and finally a quintet with Paul Horn, cellist Fred Katz, John Pisano on guitar and Carson Smith on bass.

JAZZ: Coleman Hawkins' "Swings", is another set originally issued on Crown. It shows the pioneer of jazz saxophone was as relevant in the early 1960s as he was in the 20s / 30s. High quality hard bop with a bluesy edge, this record features a line-up of musicians familiar to those who read the backs of Blue Note and Prestige LPs: Ossie Johnson drums, Thad Jones on trumpet, George Duvivier on bass and the excellent Don Costa on piano and vibes. JAZZ: Chet Baker was the face of 1950s West Coast jazz. His sublime trumpet-playing combined with film-star good looks made him a star. His recordings for Pacific Jazz were the very apex of his career, and often considered the finest of these were the sessions that produced "Chet Baker & Crew". Six years later Pacific sold this set of out-takes to Modern. Featuring saxophonist Phil Urso and pianist Bobby Timmons, these are every bit as good as the originally released versions. This updated 2013 version has been remastered from source tapes, has fresh sleeve notes and is packaged in a digipack with new artwork. Tracks are the same but in a different running order.

JAZZ: As part of our Boplicity Jazz series we present one of the most historically important recordings first issued by the Los Angeles-based Modern label. Dating from 1948, some tracks recorded at the Shrine Studio as part of the Gene Norman sessions, this album features the cream of Los Angeles talent. Alongside Dexter Gordon - with whom he recorded - Wardell Gray was one of the most influential figures on the early L.A. bebop scene. His fast, flowing tenor saxophone work was eulogised by Jack Kerouac in On The Road. Alongside the fast-fingered piano work of Errol Garner and trumpeter Howard McGhee, he is clearly a star player. (Previously deleted:9/1/04. Original release date:8/23/02) The session also featured Barney Kessel, Vido Musso and Red Callender.

JAZZ: Louis Armstrong was one of jazz's greatest names, long recognised as a great innovator as well as a populariser. His recordings with his Hot 7s and Hot 5s in the 20s and 30s are regarded as some of the most important of the 20th Century. In the following years his peerless trumpet playing and vocal talent took him to the top of the pop charts. He signed to Flying Dutchman to make the album "And His Friends". Label-owner Bob Thiele wrote his big hit of 1968, 'What A Wonderful World'. Thiele designed this album as a celebration of Armstrong's 70th birthday, (although his date of birth, given as 4 July 1900 in the liner notes to the LP, is now questioned in several sources) throwing a large party for him in the studio at the start of three sessions which began on 26 May 1970. This explains how the album's opening track, 'We Shall Overcome', features a chorus sung by, amongst many others, Miles Davis, Ornette Coleman and Leon Thomas.

JAZZ: This was made by a fine small jazz group operating in the early 60s, co-led by saxophonist Harold Land and vibes player Bobby Hutcherson. They released records under Bobby's name for Blue Note and under Harold's for Cadet and Mainstream. Based on the West Coast, Harold was one of the best players of his generation. An integral member of the Max Roach & Clifford Brown group, he made his own records such as "The Fox" before joining Gerald Wilson's big band in the early 60s. He joined up with Bobby Hutcherson in 1967 and for the next five years they made a series of outstanding albums. "Choma (Burn)" was the second issued on Mainstream and is a thrilling exploration of the post-bop small group sound. Whether it is the almost free title track, or the funkier 'Black Caucus', the unusual two piano line-up is its equal. Jazz at the highest level and its first ever issue on CD.

JAZZ: Duke Ellington was perhaps jazz music's greatest composer of the 20th century. His importance led to him being asked to provide the musical focal point for the celebrations for the 100th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation of Abraham Lincoln on 1 January 1963, freeing all slaves who were living in the ten states rebelling in the Civil War. Ellington wrote an extended piece which combined newly composed music with well-chosen works from earlier in his career and captured a wide panorama of the black American experience: from gospel to the blues. Singer Joy Sherrill was often the focal point, ably assisted by the Ellington Orchestra. Stridently titled "My People" and featuring an early musical tribute to Martin Luther King, it was released on Bob Thiele's mid-60s Contact label but failed to sell in large numbers. Thiele reissued it on Flying Dutchman in the early 70s, but this is the first time that it has been reunited with its original artwork. It is another fine addition to our Boplicity range of jazz classics.

JAZZ: This 1971 work by Roy Haynes and his group The Hip Ensemble was recorded for Mainstream. The group featured two young players who went on to achieve great success: tenor player George Adams and trumpeter Marvin Peterson - a triumph for Haynes' championing of youth. It is a typical early-70s mix of modal and free jazz, played by a group that is half way between acoustic and electric. The material allows the players to stretch out, pushed along by the veteran drummer.

This, his debut album as solo artist, is a magnificent, largely acoustic, session unusual for this period. VOCALS - JAZZ & POP: "A Time In My Life" was Sarah Vaughan's second album for Mainstream Records, and is one of the classic recordings of her later career. Bob Shad, Mainstream's owner, had produced the singer at Mercury in the 1950s, and he shows his skill by the clever updating of her style for a contemporary audience.

VOCALS - JAZZ & POP: Teresa Brewer was a child star who became one of the biggest pop singers of the 1950s, moving into jazz in the early 70s. These two albums, which hooked her up with the two greatest band leaders: Count Basie and Duke Ellington, are a pleasant surprise and show her to be a natural in this company. They led to a series of LPs showcasing her talents with other jazz greats, but the charm of this pair was never bettered.
