OLDIES: Hollywood maverick Gary "Alley-Oop" Paxton tried his hand at all sorts of genres back in the early-mid 1960s. His girl group recordings rank with some of his best, thanks to his tremendous stable of writers. The music on this 26 track CD was made from 1963-67 and leased to Paxton-run imprints like Garpax and Star-Burst. Most of these recordings are presented here for the first time from recently archived master tapes. Highlights include the Rev-Lons and their well-known title track, plus all their subsequent singles; the precocious Beverly Williams, who turns in some fabulous Spector-esque sides; classic swingers such as Diana Dawn and Mary Saenz; and even Paxton's wife, Jan.

OLDIES: (2 albums on one CD) This is the first of three CDs to be released in 2004 and 2005 that will reissue the complete solo, duet and group Hickory recordings of the Newbeats. The trio is known for its classic oldie "Bread And Butter" and also for the spectacular falsetto of lead singer Larry Henley -- but the group charted several other singles in the U.S.A. and around the world. There was much more to them than that blockbuster hit, as these packages will show. This CD spans 1964 and 1965 and contains the first two of the Newbeats' three Hickory albums, plus two bonus cuts that were not originally on any album, and features four U.S. Top 40 Singles in all. Many of the tracks are making their CD debut.

Here are 24 more tracks, transferred from the original 45 and 78 masters and sounding better now than at any time in the last six decades. BLUES: This 24 track CD features top-drawer 1960s Chicago blues and R&B from Federal Records (the King subsidiary), with almost all the tracks new to CD. The headline artists are future soul star Syl Johnson, Lee "Shot" Williams and recent UK visitor Eddy Clearwater, all produced by the great Sonny Thompson. A major revelation is the marathon 1961 session by the unknown Willie Wright & the Sparklers, with as tough a set of "new" blues as you are likely to hear this year. In his notes, Chicagoan Bill Dahl (the co-compiler with John Broven) contributes the colourful stories behind the recordings, based on personal interviews.

This volume deals with their early years as (predominantly) R&B songwriters in L.A., starting with their first recorded compositions by Jimmy Witherspoon and the Robbins and ending just prior to the start of their great successes with the Coasters and Elvis Presley. It also includes the first of their earliest national and international pop successes with the Cheers, Vicki Young and Edith Piaf! Several of the tracks are featured in previously unreleased alternate versions, while many others are being digitized for the first time here.

BLUES: In 1963, Fantasy hired legendary L.A. production team Cliff Goldsmith and Ray Shanklin to furnish artists for their R&B subsidiary. Over the next two years the team would produce a small but perfectly formed catalog of classy, soulful blues of the highest quality, showcased for the first time on this 25 track CD. It features 7 tracks by Little Johnny Taylor that are totally new to CD, including three titles previously unissued. Also featured are blues stalwarts like Clay Hammond and Saunders King, along with a handful of more obscure acts like Del Cunningham, Joe Johnson, Billy Keene, Rob Robinson and others. All tracks were cut in L.A. from 1963-65, with this being the debut on CD for 22 of the 24 sides.

OLDIES: (2-CD set) Here are the late great Los Angeles R&B vocalist's RCA complete recordings -- it includes two full albums and nearly a dozen non-album As and Bs. Jesse Belvin was signed by RCA in 1958, and was just building a solid career there when the Grim Reaper stepped in and took over his contract. As can be deduced from the track listings, the material on the CD is very standards-oriented (as were Sam Cooke's early RCA albums) and aimed at a young adult market rather than the Boyz From The Hood who bought "Beware," "Dream Girl," and "Girl In My Dreams." Features some of the best West Coast jazz musicians of the era (Art Pepper, Russ Freeman, Marty Paich, Red Callender and others).
